Your weekly guide into the Athens tech ecosystem
Greetings from Athens Tech Circle and welcome to the 8th edition of #Techincider!
In this week’s edition, we will be exploring the world of artificial intelligence. Yesterday, we had the privilege of attending The Lyceum Project: AI Ethics with Aristotle, organized by Stanford University's Human Centered AI, Oxford University's Institute for Ethics in AI, and the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos,” in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The project recommends the basic ethics developed by the 4th Century BC Greek philosopher, Aristotle, as the most compelling framework for addressing the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence today. Some key takeaways include:
Why Fear AI? There is a lot of hype around AI, and for the first time in history, humans are facing existential challenges and are no longer considered the only superior beings as machines become smarter with powerful and versatile uses of technology that affect our way of life.
The fear of being replaced by AI raises a critical question: “What does it mean to be human in today’s world?” For this, the Aristotelian framework, with its rich conception of human nature at its core, provides insights into how we can live our best lives.
Understanding AI's Potential: Only a few experts truly grasp AI's full capabilities, making it essential to demystify and responsibly harness its power.
As we continue to integrate AI into our lives, reflecting on what it means to be human becomes crucial. By leveraging the wisdom of Aristotle, we can strive to harness the benefits of AI while addressing its challenges, ensuring a future where technology enhances rather than diminishes our humanity.
